Civilian Response Unit (CRU)

The Civilian Response Unit was formed in 2021 in response to the Police Department’s desire to provide the citizens of the city with better service, along with the realization that every call for service does not require a police officer to respond.

These civilian employees are not armed and do not respond to calls where a suspect is on the scene or likely to return. Their role is to investigate calls, collect evidence (including fingerprinting) and write police reports.

Work in partnership with Patrol and our citizens to maintain a safe, peaceful community by providing excellent police services dedicated to the highest standards of ethics and integrity.

Have you interacted with someone from the Civilian Response Unit?

On a daily basis, Civilian Response Specialists answer approximately 80 calls and write roughly 32 police reports. This reduces the police officers' call load so that they can focus on true emergency calls.

  • Assault by Threat
  • Burglary
  • Criminal Mischief
  • Fraud
  • Harassment
  • Info Only Reports
  • Theft
