The coach yells over and over, “I want 110% effort.” The aerobics instructor pleads for a “110% effort.” The music director wants “110% concentration.” There is no such thing as giving “110%.” Once you have given 100%, you have nothing left; you have given all.

So really what the coaches, instructors, and directors are saying is that you are not giving them 100%. They are casting a finger at you and saying, “You are only giving me 85%” and the only way they can think of to motivate you is to implore you to accept a lie. It may motivate you to last one second longer or to give one more try, but it is still a lie. If you truly give 100%, you have nothing left to give.

It’s amazing how we transfer this type of lie into our spiritual relationship with God. We ask God to give us more of the Holy Spirit, when He has already given us 100% of His Holy Spirit. Of course this fits neatly into the thinking of the super spiritual among us, because they have a notion that God’s 100% left a little in reserve and they want to have 110%. That is calling God a liar! The hymnist got it right, “Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe…”

On the other hand, there are some that feel they only got 85% of the Holy Spirit; though a much humbler lie; nevertheless, a lie. Jesus was all that was needed and all that was required. The functional word that brings this whole thing alive is “all.”

God left nothing in reserve; therefore, He gave it all when He gave His Son to die for us. It leaves us only to believe and surrender our all for Him, all the time, with all our hearts. It’s not that God could ever be less than perfect, but He requires of us only 100% and that is the 100% He gave us through Christ.

Scripture: Matthew 3:11b – He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Thought: Wow, and I thought God wanted from me more than He gave to me.

Prayer: Father, thank you for the all You gave to me. I know that I have a place in my heart that is exactly the right size to hold it, all of it. Thank you Jesus!

???? God – The Master Teacher

During a shift with one of our amazing officers, an email came across my cell phone. It was an officer with a nearby city where I served. He was informing the pastors that their officers were on the scene of a suicide. The victim was an 11 year old. Thoughts raced toward the officers who were on scene as well as the parents of the child. The pastor who was on scene later gave a captivating account of that event to the rest of us.
Although time has passed, the family of this child still is dealing with the pain. I can relate. My family still is dealing with the journey to heaven taken by our grandson prior to living three full months. Thirty years have passed. We have learned that pain does not go away this side of heaven. It subsides – but serves to shape us. We have this promise: “God is a merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others” (2 Corinthians1:4). God’s comfort, as well as our personal encounter with pain, has a purpose. It is far more effective than formal training. My professors were limited in teaching me how to interact with a grieving family. God has all the resources and is the master teacher.
Hundreds (including my family) experience emotional discomfort on the anniversary of a loved one’s passing. Our hearts are sore at each one. But we are not strangers to grief when this happens to others. When an officer drives me to such a scene and walks in with me, I am determined to stay out of God’s way. He is “the source of all comfort.” He may choose to bring comfort through me, another family member, a friend or another pastor. In either case, it is “God the Father” who delivers the comfort.
Apart from their initial time of silent presence with Job, his friends failed him miserably. Job confronted God as to why he was suffering so severely. At least the failure of his friends drove him to God who provided ultimate comfort.
The officer and I left his beat and drove miles across town to the scene of a suicide. Before going in he gave me the number of the local Suicide Loss Team. I called and was assured there would be someone on scene in an hour. Each member of that team has experienced what we are approaching.
Recently I received this from an officer: “I miss hanging out with you.” I am thankful for the insight of those who understand that calls often go beyond what either of us can offer.

Selfless Servitude

Matthew 20:27-28 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

As I have observed children at play, the order of their playing catches my attention. It doesn’t take long before the leaders begin to stand out from the others. Sometimes those who are leaders dominate the other children in their demands while others will do so by persuasion. Yet, there are some who will quietly include others through their sharing. Even though we have reached adulthood, those same attributes are still prevalent in our lives. Those who tend to be domineering often find their world of effective leadership is limited and small. When we look beyond our own ambitions and into the hurting lives of others, it can create a desire to reach into their world with help only God can give through us. Our own problems are placed second to the immediate needs they have. You do this daily and without second thoughts. Personal gain and prosperity aren’t a part of the equation. Perhaps you receive a word of gratitude. But more times than not, your selflessness seems to be expected. Nevertheless, always remember that your real reward is yet to come. Because God, who sees in secret and knows our motivations, will reward you. Your labor is not taken for granted by everyone. Your selfless servitude will be recognized in due time. If not in this life, it will be in the life to come. So, if I may encourage you, hold your head high and continue seeking to do the good. Your service is not overlooked. And a grateful community honors your service.

Becoming Perfect! Did you know that God gave us all the ability to become perfect? God would never tell us to do something that was impossible for us to do! Matthew 5:48 in The Passion Translation says: “Since you are children of a perfect Father in heaven, you are to be perfect like him.” In the King James Version it reads this way: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” So becoming perfect…you might say...that’s a heretical thought but obviously Jesus didn’t think so. It was Him speaking this in the gospel of Matthew. So how do we become perfect as Jesus encouraged us to? James 1:4 tells us how: “but let patience have her perfect work that you may be perfect and entire wanting nothing.” Oh brother, patience? But who likes to be patient? Well if we are going to attain that perfect status it begins with patience. Patience means that we trust God for His timing and His outcome. We are not pushy nor are we anxious. So staying in an attitude of calm and rest can bring about perfection in our lives. Put it to a test and see if your life becomes easy and well-rounded. Be perfect as your Perfect Father is perfect. GOD ALWAYS KNOWS WHERE YOU NEED TO BE!

I was in the Army when our unit was deployed to Iraq during the Gulf War.

Imagine what it was like to be in the middle of a war..dark skies..smoke everywhere..Marines standing guard in machine gun nests on top of our roof..we had taken a bombed out building and we're using it as a shelter..I was sitting on the 1st floor hand washing my Battle Dress Uniforms (BDU) with a bucket and sponge scrubber with a little hand soap..as far as you could see it was dirty uniforms and all types of guns and weapons in combat..I was thinking about all the fear..despair..anger..no hope..lost. There was a barbed wire fence set up around our perimeter..little children came and stood by the fence wanting chocolate candy we had from our Meals Ready to eat (MRE)..looking a the poorest of kids all in tattered clothes and no shoes..was hard for me seeing them on the other side of our fence..All of a sudden I noticed something..all the children were in a huddle near the right side of fence yelling "Cho-co-latay"..their was one child standing by himself near the left side of the fence all alone..he did not have is hand out for candy..he had a big smile on his face..he pointed at me and made the sign of the cross on himself and then he pointed right at me..so I did the sign of the cross and pointed back at him..then he ran away. THAT WAS IT! GOD showed me in the darkest..difficult..wartime. Now I knew my reason for being there. And a little child shall lead them. GOD showed me I was exactly where he wanted me to be..Sharing the gospel and doing the best job I can..because other's are always watching you! I knew I was in the middle of that war to share the gospel whatever it took to get the job done for Jesus! I never doubted again where I was because I was always there for GOD and his purpose! Amen.

No Condemnation

"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit." Romans 8:1

Jesus came to break the curse of sin, shame and condemnation in our lives. He came so that we could see things the way God sees them. He sees you as valuable, strong, capable, talented and trustworthy. The voice of condemnation says exactly the opposite. Condemnation is a loss of value. Condemnation is never from God. The Bible tells us there is no condemnation for those who are in Jesus the Christ. When you embrace and declare God’s truth in your one life, you activate His power to overcome the voice of condemnation. No matter how you may be feeling, wake up every morning and declare that the Greater One lives in you. Declare that you are strong in the Lord.. Declare that He loves you and has called you according to His purpose. Choose to see yourself as valuable; the way God sees you.

Battle of the mind

The Disaster Distress Helpline calls were up 338% in March over February. Certainly we are in a season of distress that is unparalleled. This Capa pastor needs no further evidence that Satan stays busy. The right seat of a police car has been my domain for eleven years. Officers have added to my awareness that Satan never takes a day off. His job is to “steal, kill and destroy.” (John 10:10). He is doing what he does best and we are feeling the impact.

I hear fear in the voices of many. If you listen closely, you will hear it in mine. A frequent phrase in the Scriptures is “fear not.” Even the Apostle Paul admitted to being deceived by sin (Romans 7:11). He discussed his own struggle with doing what he knows is wrong and not doing what he knows is right. I am in good company.

Luke 21 contains many red letters. They are the very words of Jesus. He is talking to His disciples about hard times that were coming. He offers two words of hope: “don’t panic” (verse 9). That is a great admonition but not easy to do. I, for one, need to limit exposure to the daily reports. There is very little hope there. No wonder the helpline is busy. It becomes a battle of our mind.

Jesus spent 40 days with his disciples between the time He was resurrected and ascended. In Acts 1, He comforts them with a reminder of a promise the Father had made to them (v. 4).Then He commits that they will receive power to play a significant part in God’s plan for the future. These men had come from other walks of life. Peter, Andrew, James and John were fishermen, Matthew a tax collector. All could have returned to their previous occupations with confidence. But they took on the risk of a new responsibility: carrying forward what Jesus had spent three and a half years accomplishing. Jesus passed on courage to those who submitted to Him. They needed that to go forward. A professor once explained that courage “is not the absence of fear but the conquest of it.” That often entails a battle of the mind.

We are given the responsibility of controlling our thoughts. Philippians 4:8 gives us a list of productive thinking and there is not one negative thought there. King Jehoram died at age 70. 2 Chronicles 21:20 says “No one was sorry when he died.” We can hold the hand of God and one another as we fight the battle going on in our minds. There’s a better epitaph for myself and brothers/sisters in blue. Call me anytime.

Victory Life

“Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.” 2 Corinthians 2:14

This scripture makes an amazing promise -- God ALWAYS leads us to triumph or victory! But can we ALWAYS count on this amazing word to be true?

I often receive emails/texts from believers who are waiting or hoping for a victory of some kind in their “one” lives. Many seem to be wondering, "Where is this 'always victory' in my one life?" The fact is, in order to gain any victory, you must find yourself in a situation that is questionable, stressful, and may even appear hopeless for a time. The promise is not that we will walk in a constant state of victory, but in every situation, God will lead us in triumph. We cannot even say we will always know what that will look like, but victory is the Lord's irrevocable promise.

"Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you." 1 Peter 5:7

God desires to take care of whatever may be concerning you today. First, understand that cares show up in your mind. When negative, self-defeating thoughts of worry come, you have to recognize them as cares and replace them with the Word of God. For example, if you are concerned about a need today, say aloud, “My God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory.” If you have fear about something, say aloud, “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.” If you have sickness in your body, declare, “By His stripes I am healed.” As you meditate on the truth and focus your heart and mind on the Father, those cares and concerns will disappear. Then, thank Him for giving you peace and joy.

When was the last time you were in a lighting store? Were all the lights the same? Obviously not. Light is generated from myriad sources.

Consider the following scriptures regarding being light.

Matthew 5:14-16.

14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

John 12:35-36

Jesus replied, “My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going. 36 Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.”

Acts 13: -47
47 For the Lord gave us this command when he said,

‘I have made you a light to the Gentiles,
to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth.’[a]”

This lesson might seem simplistic, but those of us who are mature need to teach those who are younger, especially those who have not been Christians for very long how to discern what type of light to be.

A novice Christian may think being the brightest, most intense light possible at all times will win the most souls, where in reality this could turn people away.

I would like to leave you with a practical passage from Ephesians 5.

5 Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.

10 Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. 11 Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. 12 It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret.13 But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, 14 for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said,

“Awake, O sleeper,
rise up from the dead,
and Christ will give you light.”

As we struggle to live this earthly life it is important to understand the dynamics of God’s tweaking of His creation. The bible is crystal clear that man is not perfect. But in His love and mercy toward His creation He places us in what feels like a vise (life’s circumstances) and begins to trim the ragged and torn edges and shape us to again be the sons and daughters He created.

It is starkly reminiscent of the avid fly fisherman that places his favorite fly back in the vise after it has been attacked by a huge trout, to lovingly trim and reshape it. Why should the fisherman repair his fly? Why not just throw it away and start over? There’s just something special and unique about that fly and with tender loving care he can repair it and make it even better. But he recognizes that if he does a great job the inevitable fate of his labor is that the fly will be chewed up and mangled yet again. But he nevertheless takes the time and effort to rebuild it.

We also are special and unique to God!

Is what we feel when God puts us back in the vice,resentment, or the acknowledgement that our Creator can repair us when chewed up and attacked by the world? Do we squirm and fight the vise, or do we feel the loving hands of a merciful God reshaping us? How hard it is to accept the correction and the pressure of heavenly hands trimming us and molding us more in His Son’s image.

God never throws His beloved children away, but He does rebuild us from time to time. We must learn to accept the correction, accept the repair and move forward to reflect His love. “God ties His own flies!’

Scripture: Ephesians 2:4-5 – But God is so rich in mercy, and He loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, He gave us life when He raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)

Thought: What a great God that chooses not to throw usaway but chooses instead to repair us for future service to Him.

Prayer: Dear Lord, allow me to feel your gentle vise daily as you love me back to usefulness for You.

Life Salvation

"Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!" Habakkuk 3:17-18

Habakkuk knew what to do when things seemed completely hopeless. His world was literally falling apart around him. There was devastation everywhere he looked. However, Habakkuk knew that God was greater than what he was facing. So, he invited God into his circumstances by rejoicing and praising Him.. No matter how difficult things may seem, God has a plan to bring you out into a place of victory. Your praise is the bridge that will carry you through because your praise connects you to your Deliverer.

officers and Blessings from the LORD. Thank you so much for your service. It takes great courage to perform calmly under such immense pressure. We all appreciate it very much. You are always in our prayers.

It is exciting to know that God has placed you in this very hour for this very purpose (Jeremiah 29: 11). God has given you a vital leadership role to perform. You have the honor of being chosen by God to restore trust within this city and to our nation.

There are so many people in this nation right now hurting; angry; scared; and saddened. So I encourage you to continue seeking the LORD for His direction. Let Him guide you because the next steps you take will determine the direction of law enforcement for years to come.

Just think about it for a second. You have been given an opportunity by God to restore the trust for law enforcement in this nation. God has chosen and surrounded you with His favor. God has blessed the work of your hands. He has given you the keys and talents to rebuild our police department’s training; procedures; and protocols. He wants to make our police department exemplary. A department that other cities will want to follow.

The Bible says when you understand His blessing is upon you and that you have a purpose for your life, then you can call on Him anytime for help (Jeremiah 29: 12). The Bible says He is committed to respond to you when you ask for His help (Jeremiah 29: 13). He’ll show-up.

God will show you how to prosper in life. He’ll restore any loss; every hurt; and any lack of trust (Jeremiah 29: 14). He’ll show you how to solve problems at your station. He’ll show you how to communicate effectively to the public. He’ll make sure you are informed about each step you need to take on each arrest and how to respond to every situation (John 16:13).

Your life will prosper and our lives will prosper as a result of your actions. Peace and blessings will flow from you. Everyone around you will see the love of the LORD in your life. They’ll see your calling and recognize the gift that you have for law enforcement. They will respect you and gladly work with you in caring for our community.

So thank you for keeping your faith strong during these dark hours and know that God has called you for this very hour to restore strength; love; trust; and peace for us all.

Thank you for the officers and public servants and city officials of Fort Worth. Holy God, For any or all of those Officers of the Fort Worth PD that have sworn, taken an Oath- to live, serve, and even give their life for the public, May they go back to their ethics, their code, and find the words that show what our country needs to see it this time...

For any Officer who would point their personal lives to a moral code, an ancient religious text, bedrock to their existence, which for them is foundation to their lives every time they wake each day, may they dig deep and find those words to know, be, do before women and men, those they serve at any and all times… may they put on and wear that character to shine through the uniform which covers them.

CLOUD OF WITNESSES

Hebrews 12:1-3
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart.”

The author of this passage in Hebrews is drawing strong parallels between living the Christian Life and running a race. As we think of this analogy, I would like for us to focus on a few things.
First, let us not forget that none of us are in a vacuum. This pandemic we find ourselves in effects all of us. We are all running a race but each one of us are in different places in the race, facing very different obstacles and distractions. What are some tangible ways that we can encourage one another in this race?
Second, we are being cheered on by a great cloud of witnesses… those who have run the race before us. It is no mistake that this passage follows the faith chapter in Hebrews 11. In the faith chapter, the author of Hebrews mentions a few people who lived by faith and are now in the presence of God. Think of those in your life who have passed on who are part of your cloud of witnesses, cheering you on?
Third, Hebrews 12:1, tells us that there are weights and sins that hold us back and slow our progress in the race. The author of Hebrews tells us to put these things aside. What are some of the things that are weighing you down right now? Loneliness? Fear of the unknown? Fear of coming down with Covid-19? Fear of a loved one getting sick? What does it look like to take these weights off and give them to Jesus?
Fourth, we need to keep our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Jesus, the Son of God, came to this earth, lived a sacrificial life and showed us the love of the Father. Jesus loved so much that He was willing to die for us on the cross. But the story doesn’t end there! He was raised on the third day and is now sitting at the right hand of God. Even though the world is in the midst of a pandemic, we can have peace and hope.
By focusing our eyes on Jesus, all the distractions of life seem to just fade away.

LORD forgive me, I have an ounce more understanding today!
Did the Lord begin to speak to you months before this shut down occurred, what was HE saying to you that prepared you for
“such a time as this”? This may sound a little peculiar, but it’s important to me, and really the things that are important to me, are important to my Father, it’s what’s in his heart towards me!
I began letting the color grow off of my hair 4-6 months ago, after 42 years of coloring I woke up one morning and said I’m done!
I have been single for six years, one of my biggest fears is being alone and lonely, I am an extreme extrovert!
He began Several years ago dealing with me about my fears, today I am fearless and not lonely,
I could not have done this sheltering in place even two years ago and remain sane and thriving!
But I am thriving through this !!!
For many this is a time to be still and let Him deal with your stuff, there is a huge harvest coming and we need to be able to deal with what’s coming to the house of Father, It is going to be a time that there is going to be so much ministry there will not be enough time or people to handle it all!

Truth That Encourages

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

I found it a challenge to stay within my limits for this devotion, but I am challenging myself to step out and learn how to do this because I love my officers and miss being around y’all so much. But more importantly, because I know right now is when you need encouragement most. Not words of platitude but words of truth. Truth that sets the mind on higher things than the circumstances of the day.

When my mom was preparing me for marriage, she taught me that the way to a man’s heart was through his belly. Now, to be honest, at the time I questioned if she knew her anatomy. But sure enough, she was right, and it is a universal truth with all living creatures! What she didn’t explain was why you would want to get to the heart.

All it took for me was one argument arguing two different sides of the same coin to realize the treasure in that wisdom. Two points of view looking in two opposite directions, yet serving one purpose, being part of the same thing and having the same value. Maybe this is where we get the old adage making heads or tails of a matter. It doesn’t take long to realize why you would need to be able to get to the heart of a matter.

No one did that better than Jesus. Sometimes, Jesus would simply call out someone’s name and be at their heart. Wouldn’t that be a great superpower to have on a call? “James, put down your weapon and follow me.” And he does it! That was what it was like when Jesus called His disciples. He called their names and commanded them to follow Him and it worked because He reached the heart immediately.

The Truth that encourages sets our minds on higher, eternal, things. Our thoughts determine where our eyes are looking. Where our eyes are set, our hearts will follow. Where our hearts are set, our souls will follow. And the soul is where the fate of man is set. Thus, we proclaim John 8:31-32, Jesus said to those who believed Him, “If you abide in my word, you are My disciples indeed. And you will know the Truth and the Truth will set you free.” The Truth that encourages sets us free.

Lead my brother Ed and all those that serve through his leadership with a clarity of heart and mind directed by Your Holy Spirit in a way that can bring glory to You alone. Hello peace officers and Blessings from the LORD. Thank you so much for all that you do for our city. Your time and effort helps keep this city safe and prosperous and we are all so thankful.

I want you to know that that you are always on God’s mind. The Bible says in Psalms chapter 8 verses 3 – 6 that He is always “mindful” about you. He created this wondrous universe just for you. He is constantly watching over you and desires to be involved in every aspect of your life. That’s exciting!

It continues to say that He will “visit” us. He wants to reveal Himself to you. It says He has “crowned” you with grace and favor. He wants you to experience His love and share in the abundance of His blessings while you walk through life. It also says that He has granted you His “dominion and authority” to use in life. All you have to do is to allow these benefits to happen.

Think about a snowflake. A snowflake doesn’t begin as a beautiful work of art. It starts out as a particle of dust. Even if the air temperature is below freezing, water droplets remain as a liquid. It isn’t until the water finds a solid object onto which it can attach to before it can freeze and form into a flake. As each flake swirls on it‘s long journey to the ground it travels through time and several layers of temperature changes. These pressures are what develop its shape and beauty.

So, just as each snowflake forms by creation through time, you can allow God to visit and guide you in every step of your life. You are the dust and God is the water. With a born again spirit you can join with God‘s presence and be transformed into His glorious image. It’s a union that will change your life into a sparkling gem of art. Just imagine what your life will be like now having God involved in each step. Now that He lives inside of you. Now you have a vision and a journey to fulfill.

God’s love really exists. It’s all there just for you. All you have to do is embrace His Love. All you have to do is say, “Yes LORD Jesus!”
My prayer for you today is that you will experience all of the love that God has for you. So, that you will really know how much He cares for you and wants to visit with you daily.

You are God’s Ambassadors

Hello heroes and heroines. God loves you. God thanks you for all that you do. Did you know that you are so very special in His eyes? Each one of you are unique. There is no one like you anywhere in this entire world. He chose you to be His ambassadors to society and blessed you to be a police officer.

Let me show you just how special you are in God's eyes? The Bible says in Psalms 113 that God knows every star in the universe. He created them and has given each one of them a name. Did you know that researchers have estimated that there are about 1 billion-trillion observable stars in the universe?

Some stars are big, some small, some red, orange, blue, or white, and yet each one has a unique function and intensity of its own. This is why the Bible says that God knows each one of us. We are each wonderfully made. We all have a purpose in God’s master plan. You must never think that God doesn’t appreciate the work that you do. He designed you specifically to be used as His instrument during this crucial time in life.

The Bible says in Psalms 139 that God purposely made you special. You are His masterpiece in progress…God wants you to continue to grow in the master plan that He has for you. That’s’ why God sent His son Jesus to open the way for you so that you could experience all His love and fulfill all the wonders that He has in store for you. God wants so much to fulfill your life. He needs you to understand this plan that He has for you. That’s’ why He wants you to be conformed in Jesus’s image, which is God’s very own image so that He can have a Father son or daughter relationship with you forever.

I believe God has a lifetime of wonders and good surprises in store for you. So let’s allow Jesus to transform our image like a star. Let’s take His plan that He has provided for you and shine burning bright in His love. Let us be like the stars in the universe…Let us shine in the darkness together. Together we can experience His warmth and His Love and share it with this city.

Silent Strength

Growing up, we have all known that one neighborhood kid that always made brags about how fast they were or how much they could do. And when they were able to perform their feat, we would feel the intimidation they were intending to convey. Now that we are grown, that same mentality crops up around us in our everyday lives. While we can't control the way others act around us, we don't have to permit their grand standing to derail us in our quiet diligence. Oftentimes someone who has been touting their own successes is actually the person that is but a flash-in-the-pan. The consistent achievement of the goals you've made for yourself testifies to the strength you have within. It's not the bragging and parting yourself on the back that matters. It's that silent, steadfast attitude that makes all the difference in the world. Whether you receive accolades from some people or not, always strive to retain your silent strength in perseverance. You are affecting lives in ways you haven't known yet. Stay strong. Keep your head held high. Your labor is not in vain.

Compassion

The most ancient manuscripts translate the word compassion as “womb of God”. A more modern rendering is “tender mercies”. I am drawn to the first translation for some inexplicable reason. It has enormous power and I sense the forward motion of life. This womb of God is full of life and hope and possibility. It doesn’t dwell on the guilt or the,” what ifs.” It dwells on true answers (God’s precepts). The womb of God is the profound center of His being. It’s where He cries. It’s where He cries for us, His beautiful children.

I am not in the least suggesting that we bottle up more and more emotional baggage that we will have to unpack later in life. Please, don’t do that! What I am professing is a lesson taught us by Christ himself. Give love unashamed of what the world thinks or teaches. Reach down into the womb of your soul, pray and cry out-loud for our families and friends. Don’t grab every morsel of guilt flying loosely around every tragedy or problem. Face up to the quilt we know that we own and let the rest go.

The world would have us simply not caring. The role of some religions is to reach emptiness. The role of a Christian is to feel and be filled. However, we can’t go around all the time sobbing and weeping on the surface, wearing every small emotion on our sleeve, and falling into a heap of helpless fears.

Things we can do!

We can pray shamelessly for our family and fellow CHRISTIANS.
We can stand tall and tell the wonderful story of Jesus with strength and power.
We can fall on our knees and pray for God’s intervention in our lives.
We can take action where we can, to help mitigate the outcome.
We can cry out loud His praises and ask for more blessings.

Crying out of love and compassion for one another has power and creates a momentum of forward movement to keep us moving toward the prize of the high calling of our Lord, in which we love one another, comfort one another, and lift up one another, in His name.

Scripture: Psalm 119:77 – May Your compassion come to me that I may live, for Your law is my delight.

Thought: It is vital that we inject Christ-like compassion into our daily lives. It is there we meet Him face to face.

Prayer: O God, wash me clean for Your service. May we love to the very core of our being, as Christ loves us.

What is the right path? Vs 16, 20

Love being a verb. The action of love. The act of will. Not an adjective. Not a description.
Gods commands ARE NOT A BURDEN!! They show His love for us, His desire for us to be happy, blessed and successful. Remain faithful!!! (For clarification, blessed doesn’t necessarily mean wealth.)

As I think back to the message and reviewing my notes above, I think of when I was living the live of death. I think about the choice I was make towards destruction. The life destruction was agonizing. Not just to me, but to those around me also. I was miserable and were those around me. Our choices and sin affect not only us, but those around us. Usually those we love the most. The odd thing is, when I was in that life, I didn’t feel like I was doing anything wrong. I thought it was everyone else. It was everyone else doing me wrong, including God.

The question our Pastor asked us as he was closing was, “Why would you CHOOSE death?” Good question. Why would we choose death and destruction? I took it a step further. Why would we choose death for our families? The text above even says, the answer is not far from us. As I seek our Lord daily, I have come to the realization, it’s not too far from me. And the CHOICE for life is really not that tough to make. We have to make a choice everyday how we live. Why is one harder than the other. It’s really not. It’s simply a choice. Make it wisely.

Brothers, we say we love our families. We say we’d die for them. If that’s true, and we want them to live, why on earth would we choose the way of death FOR them by not leading? By rejecting the choice of being the Kohen for them? Moses says countless times in Deuteronomy to teach our families...let’s head this warning and imperative. Be the Kohen...their Spiritual Leader.

Devotional – Midnight Life

"About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose." Acts 16:25-26 NIV

Paul and Silas were put in jail for spreading good news. It was not fair. They were beaten and accused without a trial. As they sat in the prison, bloodied, bruised and hopeless, it looked like things were over for them. When they had no hope, nowhere to turn, when they were trapped and bound in their circumstances, they began to sing praises to God. As they did, right at midnight—their darkest hour—there was suddenly a great earthquake. The prison doors flung open, their chains fell off, and they walked out as free men. We have all had times when we felt completely trapped by circumstances. We have all felt lonely and hopeless. I encourage you to do what Paul and Silas did and begin to praise God. When you praise Him no matter what, that is when God enters your situation. That is when He can break your chains and set you free. Praise Him in your midnight hour and watch Him show up and set you free.

Prayer

Depending on your religious tradition or what you were taught as a kid, prayer may seem foreign, elusive or like speaking words that go no farther than the ceiling.

Prayer doesn’t have to be like that. It can be as fresh water to one parched. There is nothing that says prayer needs to be formal or worded just right with thees, thous and where to fors. Prayer is conversation.

I think of Nehemiah – he spent considerable time in prayer, but when he was in front of the king, and the king asked Nehemiah how he could help, Nehemiah’s response was “with a prayer to heaven” make a reply. This prayer certainly couldn’t have been long and formal. I can imagine him praying silently, “Father, I need your help NOW.”

In John 17 we see one of Jesus’ prayers to the Father – it was fairly in depth. However when lots were being cast for His clothes, Jesus’ prayer was for God to forgive them because, “they know not what they do”.

Our prayers can be offered silently and in private or they can be done corporately. They can be a song or written as a poem. What matters is they be offered from the heart.

As it says in James 5:16,” the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” Pray. Pray often. Offer prayers of thanks, for understanding, of praise and for God’s assistance and intervention.

Be like the man in Mark 9:24 who wanted Jesus to heal his son. When Jesus told him anything was possible, his rprayer was, “I believe, help my unbelief”.

I love James 5:16, “ The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” In and of myself I am not righteous, but God sees me through the blood and righteousness of His son, so my prayer is powerful and effective.

As I pastor Roca Viva Church during a pandemic, I am discovering and improvising ways to carry out my calling in serving our members and community.

As we go through trials, tragedies and sudden death, I search for answers, direction and words that bring consolation and peace to the heart and mind.
Whether personal, for someone in the church, state, or nation, in this case for the entire world, I always go to Psalms 139…

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” Psalms 139:23-24 NLT

As I seek God during the past month, the following verses jump out at me.

“Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.”
Romans 13:1 NLT

“So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished.” Romans 13:2 NLT

I am a 65 year old Hispanic man who was raised to respect my elders and people in authority. I do not come from a religious family, I came to know the Lord at the age of forty, but I have always obeyed people in authority, whether I agreed with them or not. We have seen that this country has gotten away from obeying and respecting our public officials, police, judges, state and federal officials all the way to the top, the presidency. Or should I say, especially the president of the USA. Not only have people disrespected the president, they have attacked him, even tried to remove him through different methods and accusations. This is not about being red or blue, this is about doing right and doing wrong. God has poured out many blessings over the past 3 years, peace and prosperity all around us, yet so many unhappy and ungrateful people.
God has placed who he has placed in office and as a believer in Christ, it is my job not only to obey and respect, but pray and be grateful for the many blessings that God has given us.

“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.” 1 Timothy 2:1-2 NLT

Humility and the Devil

I think James and Peter must have been working out of the same play book. Both speak of humility immediately followed by telling us to resist the devil.

In James 4 it says, “‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.”

In I Peter 5, “‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.”
Could it be that when we are prideful we think we are powerful enough to take on the devil, or don’t really believe he will attack us? We do not need to live in fear of the devil, but we do need to recognize our reliance upon God, and deal with the devil using God’s tools – resistance and awareness, and when we are confronted by Satan to stand firm.

At present our brothers and sisters throughout the world are facing the same kinds of suffering we are, as Satan comes against us with everything surrounding covid 19. The big difference, is here in the US most of us are much more able to avoid the disease. We don’t have to walk long distances to get water. We have refrigeration, most have health insurance and access to excellent health care. Satan still finds ways to attack – he wants us to be afraid, he wants us to hoard and he wants us to be self-reliant.

Throughout God’s word it says “do not be afraid”. Several places remind us to be generous and to trust in Him and His power. You may be in a good place today, humble and resisting the devil. If so, praise God, if not, He is more than willing to assist you in this. If you are not being attacked today you might be in the days to come. Take heart Jesus will never leave you or forsake you, and He is able to deliver you.

LORD forgive me, I have an ounce more understanding today!
Did the Lord begin to speak to you months before this shut down occurred, what was HE saying to you that prepared you for
“such a time as this”? This may sound a little peculiar, but it’s important to me, and really the things that are important to me, are important to my Father, it’s what’s in his heart towards me!
I began letting the color grow off of my hair 4-6 months ago, after 42 years of coloring I woke up one morning and said I’m done!
I have been single for six years, one of my biggest fears is being alone and lonely, I am an extreme extrovert!
He began Several years ago dealing with me about my fears, today I am fearless and not lonely,
I could not have done this sheltering in place even two years ago and remain sane and thriving!
But I am thriving through this !!!
For many this is a time to be still and let Him deal with your stuff, there is a huge harvest coming and we need to be able to deal with what’s coming to the house of Father, It is going to be a time that there is going to be so much ministry there will not be enough time or people to handle it all!

The Quality of Continuance

The excitement of a new adventure can in many cases bring high hopes of achievement. And oftentimes our imagination will carry us away toward lofty goals that belie our abilities. It's when the methodical task of persevering while seeing little progress sets in that we lose interest in the process and easily abandon that original goal we had envisioned. Somehow settling for a lesser outcome becomes acceptable now. During these times we ought to reflect on that saying we all remember, "Slow and steady wins the race." Or as Solomon penned in Ecclesiastes 9:11, "I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all." Continuance (the state of remaining in existence or operation) is the quality within our character each of us are striving toward. When we reach the climax of our endeavors, the rewards, while not necessarily monetary all together, brings a satisfaction that will always be unsurpassed.

Lord Jesus, you have brought us to where we are today. You have and are directing our steps. Your guidance is essential in our direction. As we travel through this life you have given us, help your people to always see the goal that You have promised those who will endure unto the end. A Ministry of Presence In The Final Hours

I want to share a story of hope in a situation that seems hopeless. This story is for anybody whose loved ones have passed away in quarantine - for you to know that the first responders, nurses and doctors were there - and they cared about your loved ones in their final moments.

The date was January 4th, 2020, I was working CAPA B-shift in South John Division.

I had just finished a grueling 12 hour shift where I was called to two separate signal 12 deceased persons, both very devastating and both very difficult to navigate but I wanted to share the story of one of them.

My first call was to John 14 beat, to a nursing home in south Fort Worth, for an un-responsive 75 year old female who had stopped breathing.

When we arrived, both The Fort Worth Fire Department and Medstar EMS were working chest compressions and desperately trying all other life-saving measures - an effort that went on for well over twenty minutes, but unfortunately, the patient passed away.

We came to find out that the deceased had no immediate family, only a case-worker whom we were unable to locate.

This call brought to mind flashbacks of my own father who died under similar circumstances, the only difference being that he was surrounded by his entire family at the time of his passing.

It saddened me to think that this woman's life and 75 years on this earth ended abruptly on the floor of a nursing home with no one to care or mourn that she was gone.

I felt fortunate that God had placed me there in that moment, along with the rest of the responding officers and care-takers, in the midst of her death and suffering - to stand in the gap for this woman, whom I’ve never met - to pray peace and redemption over her in her final moments on this earth and to mourn on behalf of her, as possibly the only people who will ever mourn for her.

I don't know her name and I don't know her story, but her life mattered and I’m grateful that I got to be a small, fleeting part of it, possibly when it mattered the very most.

God tells us in John, chapter 11 that he sees the affliction of those who are suffering. Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus, in the same way that we weep for those whom we have lost.

God knows, he sees, and he cares.

Shelter in place has allowed us
the benefit of spending time with our families. It has also allowed us to spend more time through Prayer and Devotion with the Lord.The truth of the matter is our quarantine time should be our Quiet time, Quality time, and
Quantity time, all which should be a solemn and serious moment with the LORD. Consider this to be family time set aside to reflect on the Amazing Grace of God.
I honestly believe that for all who claimed the name of Jesus have been called out to be homeschooled by way of the Holy Spirit. So by any biblical means necessary, "Let us not become weary in well doing "Gal.6:9
Remember Jesus Himself promised us that "He will never leave us nor forsake us"

??The Gift of Hope
Where would we be without it? The absence of hope leaves us in the quagmire of our present circumstances. It is reported that calls to crisis lines are up over 90%. Alcohol sales reportedly are on the rise. Life has a way of taking us to unwanted places and we become short sighted. The life of my only brother was cut short by a drunk driver. Our first grandson was the victim of SIDS just short of three months old. My livelihood lost at 40 with the responsibility of a wife and 3 children. Hope is a gift. Chuck Swindoll wrote that hope is as important to us as water is to a fish, as vital as electricity is to a light bulb, as essential as air is to a jumbo jet. Hope is a basic to life.”
God said it: “I have chosen you and will not throw you away. Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand” (Isaiah 4l:9b,10). Jesus learned obedience by the things He suffered (Hebrews 5:8). Just last weekend we celebrated the good that came from His suffering.
Graduation from CAPA training was eleven years ago this month. The training was rich but incomplete. Much more has been learned at the feet of those I refer to as my “post graduate professors.” Each officer who has taken me to the scene of trauma and introduced me to a hurting person has contributed to my growth. I am not the author of hope – God is. All I can do is ask Him to give me words to point the hurting to Him.
Although we are very different we have one thing in common: We all know what it means to hurt. It is a universal language. Tears are the same for everyone. Currently, we are facing many unknowns – a time when hope is needed desperately. I received a text message from an officer today. I needed that. I am doing my best to focus on a bright future. I need hope as much as anyone and am seeking to pass it along to my family and those around me.
Chuck Swindol puts it this way: “So if you want to smile through your tears, if you want to rejoice through times of suffering, just keep reminding yourself that, as a Christian, what you’re going through isn’t the end of the story…it’s simply the rough journey that leads to the right destination.”
“God will not throw us away”. That is His promise.

We as human beings are driven to move ahead or reach out to those around us when we can see results from our efforts. Those results may come in various forms such as a heartfelt thank you, a person changing their behavior, or some other obvious positive outcome. But, as we also know, these things will not always occur. Sometimes it seems like our efforts either fall flat, come up short, or don't seem to be appreciated. It's at these times when we have to remember that the Lord sees our labor and makes a notation so to speak. When we go about our daily routine, the Lord sees and indeed orders our steps. Let us be reminded that the ultimate reward for our labors is not in this life or time. The Apostle John recorded the Lord in Revelation 22: 12, "And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be."

Lord Jesus, you are the giver of life. The very breath we breathe is from you. You are our source of strength. You have brought us to where we are right now. You know where our steps will take us from here. May you always guide us in the way we should go. May our complete trust be in You. Lord, give your angels charge to keep us in all of our ways. And may our ways be pleasing in Your sight. As we encounter the challenges which are ahead, give us the courage to be useful vessels in Your hands. In everything we do, Lord, we want you to have the preeminence. In Jesus name we pray.

“That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” John 1:9

D. L. Moody told the story of a man who was crossing the Atlantic by ship. He was terribly seasick and confined to his cabin. One night he heard the cry "Man overboard!" However, he felt that there was nothing he could do to help. Then he said to himself, "I can at least put my lantern in the porthole." He struggled to his feet and hung the light so it would shine out into the darkness.

The next day he learned that the person who was rescued said, "I was going down in the dark night for the last time when someone put a light in a porthole. As it shone on my hand, a sailor in a lifeboat grabbed it and pulled me in."

All of us have weaknesses -- and times of weakness. The fact of the matter is, though, that weak or not, we need to muster up the strength to put our lights in our portholes for the sake of the dying and the lost among us. It is so tempting to sulk in our weaknesses, and stay in our cabins -- but God expects more of us. He has given us the strength to do all things -- even move mountains! There are so many people around us sinking in despair. God has chosen us to reach out and light up their lives!

Let us do something extraordinary for the Lord today. Be bold, speak up, and let us get beyond our weaknesses!

The joy of the Lord is our strength. Dear Lord we esteem your Word higher than our necessary food. You are an ever present help in our times of trouble and your word promises that those who keep their minds on you shall be in perfect peace. Dear Father guard the hearts and minds of all officers, first responders and our essential workers. Dear Heavenly Father, forgive us our sins that you may hear our prayers. Lord cover every Police Officers every Chaplain, Captains, And all in charge, cover the Police Chief And his cabinet and all the families of these great men and women. Cover everyone and everything connected to them with your amazing grace. Lord let these men and women of law enforcement know that as your word has declared it you are their protection going in and coming out. And nothing shall by any means harm them or their families. We pray. Father God, Place a threefold hedge of protection around them and their families like you did Job. Lord remove all stress, anxiety or worries from their minds and give them perfect peace that only comes from you Lord Jesus. Let every officer know that as they leave their homes to get in their cars and go to do this great work they are never alone for you, oh God have sent the Holy Spirit as their comforter and companion. And you Lord are our ever present help.
So give them joy today and the blessed assurance to know that this to shall pass. But your word, your love for us and your hope of Glory and your protection is eternal.

“Well-Being”

One of the most challenging things during anxious and uncertain times is our feeling of “well-being”. It is not just a challenge, it is a necessity that we create the positive feeling toward the here and now, as well as the future.

The two main components of “well-being” are “Security and Significance”. These two are the building blocks that we can use to conquer our doubt and anxiety. As a Christian we are uniquely gifted with both components.

The bible shouts at every turn, “God with never, never leave us nor forsake us, Hebrews 13. What incredible security God promises through His word. And for sure, how unbelievablysignificant we are in that God gave up His son for us. How can I possibly deny that God’s provision is sufficient to accomplish those two feelings of “well-being.” However, to activate these components we must “act our way to a feeling, not feel our way to an action.”

QUARANTINE

The Latin root of the word "quarantine" is "forty".

So what does the Bible say about 40?

The flood lasted 40 days.

40 years Moses fled Egypt.

40 days Moses stayed on Mount Sinai to receive the Commandments.

Exodus lasted 40 years.

Jesus fasted for 40 days.

Lent is 40 days.

40 days for a woman to rest after giving birth.

A group of theologians believe the number 40 represents "change”. It is the time of preparing a person, or people, to make a fundamental change.

Something will happen after these 40 days. Just believe and pray. Remember, whenever the number 40 appears in the Bible, there is a "change".

Please know that during this "quarantine" rivers are cleaning up, vegetation is growing, the air is becoming cleaner because of less pollution, there is less theft and murder, healing is happening, and most importantly, people are turning to Christ. The Earth is at rest for the first time in many years and hearts are truly transforming.

So, during this time, enjoy it with your loved ones and return to the family altar together. Family prayer is a great blessing. Through prayer you will see the changes God can work in you and in your home. Christ promises us that everything works together for the good for those who love God: Romans 8:28!

Remember we are in the year 2020, and 20 + 20 = 40.

Also, 2020 is the year of the United States Census. Jesus Christ, the savior of the world, was born during a census.

Lastly, 2020 is perfect vision. May our sight focus on the Lord and living according to His perfect vision for us knowing He holds us in the palm of His hand.

May these days of "quarantine" bring spiritual liberation to our souls, our nation, and our world.

It was once asked, “Is the Lord meeting your needs or isn’t He? Now, most Christians would say, ‘Why, certainly the Lord is meeting all my needs, but . . .’
Following that ‘but’ with all the things that are troubling them.
You've heard, the Lord is my shepherd, right? Well officers now could be thinking…
The Lord is my Shepherd, but my job is more dangerous than ever.
The Lord is my Shepherd, but I don't know how to be calm.
The Lord is my shepherd but this virus is terrifying.
You see? You have the ‘but’ in the wrong place. If we rearrange the "but" we can re-anchor our confidence in God.
Here's how it might sound…. I am not feeling very strong, but the Lord is my Shepherd.
There is so much confusion these days, but the Lord is my Shepherd.
My job is more dangerous than ever, but the Lord is my Shepherd.
This virus is terrifying but the Lord is my Shepherd.
When God is given His proper place in our talk and walk… worry dies.
When we begin with the Lord; it is the beginning of the end of our fears.
In Psalm 23, King David begins with, the Lord in all of His greatness and glory.
Then he proceeds to reflect on God’s person, peace, provision and protection. His confidence builds to a point where he exclaims,
“Surely goodness and mercy will follow me, all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”.
When David wrote Psalm 23:6, there was no worry in his heart and no wavering in his voice.
He was a man sure about God and the love He had for him, as God's servant.
In a world that constantly chips away at our confidence in God, may we respond by developing and guarding our confidence in God?
Center your heart and mind. God is present with you and He goes with you.

A heart worth protecting

We arrived on scene to confront an angry trucker. This subjectapproached me and wasn’t happy. In a flash, the officer positioned himself in front of me. I still recall the officer’sname. Another officer and I were on an elevator escorting a prisoner from the detective office. He was restrained but glaring at me and my I.D. badge. The officer stood firmly - eye to eye with the subject – inches from his face. When the subject noticed that I was a pastor, he asked if I was there for some kind of end of life ceremony. I told him that my boss (God) still had plans for him on earth..
I’ve been asked to remain in the car until it was safe to exit - then quickly summoned when it was clear. I’ve never felt more protected. Thank you for making your passenger seat availableand being conscious of my safety. The image of authority you project does not tell your entire story. There is more behind the badge and that’s the part that inspires me most. I am often blessed when your spouse and children join us for lunch or experience a Skype introduction during a slow time. When King Solomon was dedicating the temple he had finished building he was speaking to God: “you alone know each human heart” (2 Chronicles 6:30). Kind of scary, isn’t it? Not that God knows but those special people in our lives may not know. Donald Miller in his book Scary Close stated “can you imagine coming to the end of your life, being surrounded by people who loved you, only to realize they never knew you.”
I’ve lived long enough to read the reactions when an officer connects with others – especially his own family. There is the stern image that is consistent with the job you do. But there is something behind the badge and I am constantly inspired to witness that part.
I understand the stress that can drive a wedge in some families. It grieves me to hear those stories. In the same prayer by Solomon, he asked “who has never sinned?”(verse 35). When I am along, you are not escorting a perfect pastor. I, too, have been guilty of smothering my joy. Your encouragement is priceless. Protect me but let your heart show. I’m here to stay – no signal 45 for me.

Lord, you have known every officer long before they were born. I continue to ask you to bless each one, our chief, his assistant chiefs and command staff. Bless those responsible for training and those dispatching the calls. Thank you for the spiritual perspective that pervades this department. I pray a special blessing on their families that give to and receive value fromthese public servants. Please station your angels around them all(Psalm 91:11) and protect them.

Life in Forward Motion

Easter 2020?

As we lament and agonize over the loss of a loved one or the loss of something dear to us, we must fight the urge to stay in one place for too long. The feelings of being stuck are the hallmarks of thought process mired in a puddle of emotions that one can only describe as a quagmire. It represents an impasse in our lives, a place too deep and too slippery to extricate ourselves from by our own devices.

On this Easter Sunday we know for sure that Christ has been there! The bible is clear in describing Christ’s time in the Garden. As He struggled to move through that excruciating moment in His life, He found traction in only one thing. His Heavenly Father was always with Him, constantly and mercifully reaching out to pull Him through that quagmire. He accepted the heavenly hand that was extended to Him. That acceptance came in the form of crying out to His Father and surrendering to His will.

“Thy will be done” will forever be the vehicle that drives us out of the quagmire or simply dries it up altogether. With God there is always a “next.” He has unlimited resources, He is unfettered by time, He simply has to say “next” and we move forward. Troubles and fear from the loss of a soul mate or parent or sibling are for sure life changing; however, God is extending His loving hand and saying simply “trust Me, I love you.” We can see and feel that change as a quagmire, or we can see it as a puddle that will begin to dry in time and free us to move forward. The times in the puddle are excruciating, but as a believer, not life threatening. You will make it out!!

Sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly, hand over hand, inch by inch; drop-by-drop we will not lose hope. There is a “next” in my life with God. He hears my cries and delivers me. Faith always looks forward. Easter Sunday is the beginning, not the end!
PRAISE OUR RISEN SAVIOR!

Scripture: Psalm 34:17 – “The righteous cry, and the LORD hears. And delivers them out of all their troubles.”

Thought: God illuminates choices, He doesn’t eliminate choices. We must moment by moment, choose Christ our Lord as our forever “next.” God’s love is forever. Easter proves it!

Prayer: Dear Lord, comfort me in my distress. Nudge me forward, but please be gentle. Guide me toward the “next” in my life.

I know you have waited patiently for God’s hand to move. You have endured for a time. I’m grateful to you that you lift your eyes to Him. It is time to elevate our faith for victory over this invisible enemy. Your faith can move mountains, heal the sick, and raise the dead. You are not a victim of your circumstances, but you are a victorious warrior. You have every weapon you need to defeat every enemy that raises its head.

Lord, I pray that we walk in faith knowing that you have given us the authority to speak to disease and see it gone. We speak to the corona virus to die in Jesus name. We claim protection for those who have not been infected and we pray for healing for those who are infected.

Mark 16:17-18 (NASB) "These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

It's a New Season
What if we couldn't have church as usual? What if we could not gather in a Church setting? What would we do as a people?
Wait, what? It has happened! Life has changed since the COVID -19 Pandemic has happened in our communities all across this country of ours.
Churches, businesses and organizations are all having to rethink how they do their daily activities.
Incomes are fluctuating, the stock market is bouncing up and down. This will have an effect on all of us sooner rather than later.
The question is, what kind of effect will it have.
Will is be positive or negative? Will we adjust our sails to the prevailing winds?
Will we be in fear or will we be in faith? All great questions to ponder in our HEARTS.

I am reading an article titled, "Leading Beyond the Blizzard: Why Every Organization Is Now a Startup". What a great read.
A Blizzard of uncertainty has hit our country like a freight train.
There is uncertainty in the stock market, uncertainty in our business community and there is uncertainty in the way Churches minister to people.
At this time of uncertainty we all must make sure that we are living on and unshakable foundation of God's Goodness.
Going forward we must realize that we are all now in a Startup mode again. We must think and act like Startup's.
On one hand this is frightening on the other hand this is exhilarating and exiting. It's a New Season for new beginnings!
Let's Awaken to the undeniable fact that "Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world!"
Adjust your sail's and let's catch the wind of Opportunity in this time of uncertainty.

So what does the bible say to us right now in this time of uncertainty?
We are exhorted to, "Not loose HEART!" (Like 18:1, 2 Cor 4:16, Gal 6:9) This is especially important right now.
Our HEARTS are the key to making it through this time.
Proverbs 14:30 gives us some insight into how we stay on top of this trying time.
Here is what it says. "A Sound HEART is Life to the body...!" The word sound is a Hebrew word that means to "be healthy".
In other words, "a Healthy HEART is Life to the body." The root in the Hebrew for sound is Rapha. This is so powerful.
The "Healthy HEART that is rooted in Jehovah Rapha is Life to the Body! Seriously this is really life changing and powerful.
The key to getting through this time is a matter of the HEART.
A Healthy HEART that is rooted in Jehovah Rapha, the God of Health and Healing.

I had spent plenty of time in prayer complaining about my “issues “. I spent a lot of time in prayer crying. A lot of time in prayer asking for answers. I had yet to spend any time in prayer asking God to take it. Giving it to Him. Asking God for strength and support, give it to Him.

The definition of support means “to hold up”, to “bear all the weight”. I had done EVERYTHING in my power, EVERYTHING in prayer BUT let God take the weight. When you ask God for something, He may not answer right away, in fact He may not answer in the way you expect. But I’m telling you, be ready for when He does. He answered my prayer in a way I never expected. It was a process and a lesson in trust and faith, but He answered. The LORD gave me a peace like I’ve never known before! A peace that surpasses ALL understanding. YHWH Shalom.

Now, for the first time in my life, knowing this peace, I felt like it was another massebah moment. Fast forward to today. I’m studying and doing research, I come across the sacrificial duties. I started reading about the peace offering. I learned:

The sacrifices of well-being’ take their name from the Hebrew word shalom, a word often translated “peace,” but whose core meaning is “wholeness.” For example, when a person repays a loan, she shaloms it, restoring the creditor to wholeness. We can assume the worshiper who brought a shalom sacrifice was expressing joy in the wholeness of life under God.

God brings a peace that brings a wholeness. This standing stone takes on a whole new meaning. I have a way to better articulate that peace! It’s a wholeness. It’s complete. No void.

So, back to a question I asked earlier. “Why me?” The more appropriate question is, “Why not me?” God knew at some point He’d be able to use the experiences I was going through to minister to someone else. He knew that through my pain, through my anger, through my hurt, He’d be glorified. Praise God He’s smarter than me! Praise God He sees the future! Praise God He did hear me! It just wasn’t in the way I wanted or expected. He answered my prayers in His time, for His purpose and for His glory.

Why you? My prayer is that as you seek God, ask Him why not you. Ask Him how He can use you. How can you use your massebah moment to show someone else God’s glory. Show them your standing stone. Let the next generation see God’s glory through your life.

Standing Stones -

Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. - Genesis 12:7

We can see examples of standing stones all through the Old Testament. The Hebrew word translated "standing stones" is massebah and means "to set up." The Israelites followed ancient customs by setting up standing stones as a reminder of God's covenant and supernatural acts on their behalf. The story of the stone was passed down from generation to generation through oral tradition.

On several occasions, the Bible mentions significant events that were commemorated with standing stones or alters to God:
There are many more examples of standing stones throughout Scripture.
I want to look specifically at the one mentioned above in Genesis 12.
God made a supernatural promise, for children to Abram, as Sarai was barren. With this covenant, Abram built an alter to commemorate this convent God made with him.
As we see in the story, Abram left the monument and went in search of that promise.
As time progressed, Abram and his wife started trying to help God along with the fruition of that covenant. Theycame up with all kinds of schemes and plans to help God out.
Problem was, it was not Gods plan. That being said, God always came through to keep His promise to Abram.
No matter how much the couple interfered or got in the way.

So it is with us. When God makes a promise to us, He is the one who makes it happen. No matter how much we try to “help”, or even how much we try to sabotage it (see story of Jonah), God always comes through to fulfill HIS purpose for HIS glory.

So the question I pose to us...what is your standing stone moment? Your “massebah” moment? When did God make a covenant or promise to you? A time when something so amazing happened that the ONLY explanation could be God?
How did you commemorate it?
What did you set up in your life to be a constant reminder of God’s goodness, grace, mercy, love and faithfulness?

Part of the purpose of these standing stones is to be that constant reminder of God working in our life. But if we, like Abram, leave that marker (out of sight, out of mind), we may find it easy to forget the promises God has made or miracles God has performed in our lives...and not pass down to the next generation. We’re not only robbing ourselves of the joy God desires for us to trust Him, we’re robbing future generations of learning and understanding the great things God has done in the lives of those that came before them.

In these uncertain times and all the chaos, I would also challenge us to look for and have our eyes open to these potential standing stone moments. In a year or 10 years when we look back, what stone can we point to and show others where God was faithful to us, our community and His people for His Glory?

Stand your stones!

0 Almighty God, Whose great power and eternal Wisdom embraces the universe. Watch over all of the police officers of Fort Worth and Law enforcement officers everywhere. Protect them from harm in the performance of their duties to stop crime and violence and to keep order in our city. We pray, help them keep our streets and homes safe, day and night. We commend them to your loving care because their duty is dangerous. Grant them strength and courage in their daily assignments. Dear God, protect these brave men and women. Grant them your almighty protection, unite them safely with their families after their duty day has ended. Please God, grant us this prayer (in Jesus name we pray). Amen.

Blessing Prayer
Blessed are you, Lord, God of Mercy, who through your Son gave us a marvelous example of charity and the great commandment of love for one another. In uncertain times, it is natural to feel fear and anxiety. That is a normal response when the future is murky, like it is now. In the face of the unknown, it is easy for fear to creep in, but let me share something I have learned about fear….
Fear crumbles when confronted by Faith
Fear is a human response; but Faith is a gift of God. He has a plan for this world, and although I do not pretend to understand His ways, I believe our response to this virus will play out in a manner that brings glory to God.
Right now, social media is full of stories describing how this virus is ravaging our world. But if you choose instead to search for positive stories, you can find countless examples of neighbors helping neighbors, communities rallying together to support one another, and people encouraging those who are on the frontlines fighting this pandemic. We all have a choice about how we view any situation, including this one. Do we see only negativity, or is this an opportunity to better ourselves and others?
Our response to this virus will be a seminal event in our lifetime. Despite what they may have accomplished throughout their careers, leaders at every level will likely be judged predominately on the decisions they take (or fail to take) during this crisis. When we each look back at our own actions during this emergency, will be proud of how we responded? Did we do our part to reduce the spread of the virus? Did we help our neighbors who lost their jobs? Did we pick up supplies for those who could not shop for themselves? Did we support our local companies so they could stay in business and keep their staffs employed? Were we an encouragement to others?
In the face of uncertainty, I have Faith:
• In God–that He will guide us through this and make us a stronger community;
• In my family and friends–that they are there to support me and each other; and
• In the courageous men and women of the Fort Worth Police Department–that they will be serving and protecting our City to the very best of their ability, despite the risks to them personally.

“Making Lemonade out of Lemons” is one of my favorite mantras. My oldest granddaughter just celebrated her birthday during the lockdown. She said to me “GiGi, I’m going to do what you always say ‘when you get lemons, make lemonade’”. She is Joshua Bohlin’s daughter (West Cpl) and she said later that this was the best birthday she had ever had.

Did you know that we all have the choice of finding positive in a negative situation? It is always our decision whether to be happy or not! I keep the Pharrell Williams song “Happy” as the ringtone on my cell phone, why? Because it’s always my choice whether or not to be happy and I try to choose joy every time. What’s the alternative -sadness, depression, anxiety? Proverbs 12:20 (NIV) “Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil, but those who promote peace have joy.” That’s what you are, Peace Promoters and Peace Keepers. This scripture says that you already have joy because you promote peace!

So I encourage you, during this unprecedented time in our history, to choose joy and happiness. Every day when you rise to meet the day’s challenges, decide to choose the positive rather than the negative. We speak happiness and joy to our Fort Worth residents in all areas of their lives and especially to our FWPD and their families. Have joy, speak joy, sing joy, dance joy, think joy, BE joy!

Hardships, set-backs, and unexpected problems are situations we all face. "Life is what you make it" is so rarely reality. Often our daily lives are influenced and, at times, dictated by things we have little or no control over. Many times I have wondered whether or not I had any control over my direction at all. Issues arise from out of nowhere and can quickly alter my demeanor and mood. Circumstances that I have absolutely nothing to do with pull me into the vortex of turmoil. At such times, my world can be shaken beyond my reasoning. It's at these times that I find myself turning to the One that is above it all. Indeed, the Lord has the ability to calm the storm. He could guide me around it also. Or, perhaps, He will be there with me in the middle of those storms. Throughout scripture we find examples of God's people going through things they were not able to control. However, God always took them to the other side. He didn't leave them alone to fail, flounder, or falter. The psalmist wrote that even though he might have to go through a very difficult situation that God would be right along beside him.
We are facing a crisis of epic proportions. We haven't seen anything like this descend upon us before. But, let's not forget that God is still in the midst of this storm. It didn't take Him by surprise. He's not alarmed by the spread we see around us. And it is not diminishing and will not diminish God's ability to protect, preserve, and provide for those who depend upon Him. Psalms 121 declares, "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth." (Ps 121:1-2). Even in the middle of this we all are facing, we can have the peaceful assurance that our lives are ordered by the same God who created the worlds. And since we have such a great Overseer, the best action we can take is to trust His guidance. He left so many promises of protection in His word. God told Israel in Isaiah chapter 43 many decades before their captivity in Babylon, "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee." (Isaiah 43:2). He was letting them know that no matter what lay ahead He would be right along beside them. Since God doesn't change, we have the same promises today. Our trust should remain in God. He has given us the breadth we breathe, the knowledge we possess, the strength we have, and the blessings we enjoy. God will bring us through this just as He has brought us through everything else we have faced.

For such a time as this;

During hard times, during good times, during all times, Abba is always reminding me that if I will surrender my fears, doubts, and my heart to Him that He will tell me the things that are on His heart and mind. He gives me solutions, He gives me answers to solve my problems, and we sure need to solve some problems right now of adjusting to what is going on in our homes, communities and cities. His Word says that He has given us everything we need for life and godliness ( 2 Peter 1:3 NKJV, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue) to me this means that i have to look within my spirit to see what God deposited in me to be a problem solver for the things He puts in front of me, to solve and then with the overflow we can help others become problem solvers!
For me I believe that officers are gatekeepers (masters of problem solving) of our cities and that they are called to do a tuff job and help others who have not tapped into their own problem solving skills, they deal with daily life issues
( thankfully everything is not a huge crime) car accidents, suicide, death notices, mental health, drug-alcohol, domestic violence etc.... and i consider it a privilege to undergird and intercede for our officers, so that they can be gate keepers with Godly answers to the issues of our cities!

May Abba bless each of you and cause His light to shine upon you, that you may tap into your own spirits for the deposits that God puts in each of you, that at the end of each day that you are able to surrender it all to God and that you experience His joy and love toward you in profound tangible ways!!!

Life in Forward Motion

If I cling to the fact of Christ and His complete sacrifice in the past, it is indeed the key to unlock a passion for the future. Satan would have you believe that your life is dangling over the ledge of destruction and you are secured by only a tiny thread of weak fabric and at any moment that thread will part and we will plummet to our doom. In reality we are as Christians held securely by an unbreakable life-line that forever ties us to the One that has won the battle for life. But we must wear that unbreakable life-line as we would wear a parachute or a life vest, as if our lives depended on it. Christ, our Paraclete, is that secure unbreakable life-line that allows our future to exist and guarantees He will walk always beside us, always within our reach in the forward motion of our lives.

With my passion for life securely held infinitely to a past event (Christ’s atonement), my future (in Christ) is wide open for living. We have forward motion woven into the very fabric of our Christian life. Grab hold of fact and let go of all that hinders. We can choose to cause our future by living life not as a gamble, but as a guarantee.

Scripture:
John 14:15-16 – “If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.”

Thought:
It’s incredible that I have not only the Son of God as my Paraclete to walk through life with, He also promises another Paraclete in the Holy Spirit to navigate with me the life He gave us.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, words cannot express the security I feel when I hear of your infinite devotion to my welfare. May my thanksgiving overflow to praise and worship for all to see.

The world sometimes leaves us feeling empty, wondering if what we are doing is worth it. As a veteran CAPA pastor, I have confessed this feeling to a few officers and received a stern rebuke for questioning my value in this work. Thank you for that. God is the scorekeeper and I appreciate the special men/women in blue for that reminder.
Two weeks before Martin Luther King was assassinated, he spoke to a crowd of striking sanitation workers in Memphis. “Whenever you are engaged in work that serves humanity and is for the building of humanity, it has dignity and it has worth.” God has made it clear to me that I could never be a brain surgeon, fighter pilot, politician or a police officer. I have the utmost respect for all of these. But it is my time with police officers that has captured my heart and drawn me to you and your families. You matter a great deal.
Please allow me a few examples. When we learned my wife had cancer we received visits in the hospital, phone calls and text messages from officers I have come to know. I was assured that prayers were being offered for CAPA Tom and his family. It has been 4 years this month since Brenda had a cancer treatment. Your prayers matter and I ask for them to continue.
You have placed me in the presence of a distraught person whose deceased loved one was next to them. I’ve seen the officer pray with a family as we stand together after a stressful confrontation. You have trusted me with an individual who has made an effort to harm himself/herself. I reach out to comfort a parent whose child has just made a horrible mistake that will affect the family for years to come. Then there is the time I relinquished my seat while the officer rescued a family trapped in their car by high water.
My education did not prepare me to deal with the issues that are part of your everyday life. It is my goal to offer comfort as a fellow struggler rather than an expert with pat answers. You are prayed for every day along with your families. My boss (God) has His eye on you. After each shift with one of our awesome officers, I come home a better person. My wife thanks you for that.
Many of you have shared with me the effort it took to get where you are. You are in your calling and God has brought you this far. He said “I will never leave you or forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Count on my boss to be your signal 63.
