Traffic Investigation Unit
The Traffic Investigation Unit was established in 1987 and was originally staffed by 7 traffic officers. These officers had the responsibility of investigating traffic related offenses and filing them with the District Attorneys Office.
In 1995-96, then Chief of Police Windham replaced the 7 traffic officers in the unit with personnel from the Detective rank. Since that time, the unit has expanded to 11 Detectives (current staffing level).
The Traffic Investigators are tasked with investigating the following types of cases: fatal motor vehicle accidents, accidents involving serious bodily injury, Intoxication Manslaughter and Assault, Accident Involving Injury/Death (FSRA), Accident Involving Damage >200, DWI offenses, Racing offenses, Driving While License Invalid and Fictitious Registration offenses to name a few.
There are several classes that the Traffic Investigators attend so they can be proficient in recreating severe accidents when necessary. Some of these classes include:
- Intermediate Accident Investigation
- Advanced Accident Investigation
- Accident Reconstruction
- CRUSH
- CDR Download
- Motorcycle Accident Investigation
